Shanghai Hotel Information
Shanghai has the highest prices for real estate on mainland China. As a result, although there are literally hundreds of hotels in the city, most of the best ones are pretty expensive, especially in comparison with elsewhere in the country. However, while prices do not compare, standards are noticeably better.
Shanghai has a selection of the very best hotels in China. Services, style and quality in the five star hotels in the city are exceptional and the choice too, is enough to satisfy many different tastes. Most of the top hotels (RMB800 to RMB1,400) fall into two categories; old art deco style renovated buildings such as The Peace Hotel, and brand spanking new towers of sophistication like The Grand Hyatt. Most of these hotels are located in the downtown area, including The Portman Ritz-Carlton on Nanjing Road, The Hilton on Huashan Road; and The Pudong Shangri-la. All these places boast first class services and advanced facilities with that additional Shanghai twist- a bit of style.
Shanghai also has numerous two or three star hotels offering good value for money (RMB400-RMB800). Many of these places, while clearly not as sophisticated as their five star counterparts are still in great central locations and cater well to foreign tourists and business travelers.
At the bottom end of the market, there is notably less choice. There are a few hotels with reasonable rooms under RMB200 but many of these are on the outskirts of the city and it's a drag to get to them. The only realistic budget options for those just visiting the city are the Pujiang Hotel and the Conservatory of Music. The prices here are pretty good but these Hotels are usually busy, so try and book ahead.

Shanghai's Entertainment
As the night falls, Shanghai, the busy and noisy city, seems to quiet down unnoticed. The streets and lanes, having suffered a day’s heavy traffic, finally get a chance to refresh themselves and shrug off the hubbub of the day. It’s time the city renewed her make-up, and just after a few moments she manages to take on a graceful bearing. Neon lights, floodlights, laser lights and other colorful lights called “stars of the sky”, suddenly, all start to glitter.
Sparking and revolving, they makes Shanghai more pretty as well as fascinating. This very moment Shanghai has taken on a look extremely different from her appearance in the daytime. In a casual and elegant fashion, she is unfolding her charm before people’s eyes.
Entertainments are rather prosperous in Shanghai. Splendid theaters, fashionable cinemas, first-class bands and luxurious dance halls have come to be seen as a kind of cultural symbol.
Nightclubs are an integral part of Shanghai entertainments. Today’s nightclubs, dintinct from those in the old days, have become the best places of exercise, amusement, sports and relaxation. The Bluebelt Recreation Club and the Night Paris around the Waihai Road, and the Big World at the city center are very popular among the people.
Submerged in the multicolored light of the neon lamps, Shanghai is shining dazzlingly.

Yao Ming--The Spokesman of Shanghai
YaoMing - I love this game
Yao Ming Profile
Name: Yao Ming
Postion: Center
Nickname: Ming Dynasty (USA), Little Giant (China)
Born: 09/12/1980
Origin: China
Status: Active
Height: 7-5/2,26m
Weight: 296lbs./134,3kg.
Schools: Shanghai Sports College, Shanghai Physical & Sport Technic Education Institute, Shanghai Foreign Language Institute
Drafted: 2002, First Round, 1st pick by the Rockets
Languages: Chinese (Mandarin) and English
Website: YaoMing.net & InterBasket
Teams (Jersey): Chinese National Team (13) Shanghai Sharks (15) Houston Rockets (11)
IBN Notes: Never has a combination of awesome size and skills come together in one package, what makes this combination odd is that it comes from far East, not exactly a hotbed for basketball prospects. But there he stands, 7-5 and 300lbs, Yao Ming is the center of the future; a better shooter than most point guards and definitely a lot more skilled than most centers, Ming has all the tools to be successful, but as of this writing, Yao lacks only the aggression and attitude that will propel him from promising pivot to complete domination of the center position.
YaoMing.net: (Source: Jane Yin) Dozens of articles have been written about him, people crowd the lines to get tickets to his games, his name and picture are strewn all over the news. Although he's only a rookie, he has become a household name. But this year's NBA number one draft pick, soft-spoken, humorous Yao Ming is much more than a magnificent basketball player. He is an explorer and a pioneer. Reminiscing about his childhood dream, he says "I wanted to be adventurer and explore the world." He reveled in geography and history. His stellar basketball moves have allowed him to begin accomplishing his childhood dreams.
Yao Ming had one of the most exciting rookie years in NBA history. In the NBA, Yao Ming scored an average of 13.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 1.74 blocks per game, earning him unanimous NBA All-Rookie First Team honors. Yao reached three blocks 26 times, as Houston held a 22-4 record in these contests. He started at center for the Western Conference in the 2003 NBA All-Star Game after ranking fourth overall in All-Star balloting with 1,286,324 votes and was named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month for December and February.
Off the court, Yao appeared on the covers of Sports Illustrated, The Sporting News, ESPN the Magazine, SLAM, Inside Stuff and Basketball Digest during his rookie season. He also received the 2003 Laureus World Newcomer of the Year award and was featured in television commericals for Visa, Apple Computer and Gatorade. During the summer, he traveled back to China to play for the Chinese National Team and hosted a mutlinational telethon to raise funds to battle SARS.
Being dubbed as the "biggest story going in the draft," by C.M. Newton of the World Basketball Championships, you would never know by talking to him. With a warm smile, Yao loves to come home from a long day work to his mom's hearty Chinese meals in their Houston home. Although he misses hanging out with his friends and going to Internet Cafes to play video games in China, Houston is a second home to him now. Everyday, he reads American papers, such as USA Today, and watches television to continue to master his English. He can't wait to hop on a bike and ride all over Houston, just like he does in China.

Former Residence of Song Qingling
Madame Song Qingling was the wife of the revolutionary, Sun Yatsen. Song lived at this house on Huaihai Lu at various stages in her life until she died in 1948. Song Qingling (unlike her sister Meiling) remained faithful to the revolutionary cause throughout her entire life and was made an "Honorary President" of the People's Republic.
The house here was built in 1920, and is a pretty western-style three-storied villa. Both this house and Sun Yatsen's former residence are fascinating insights into old Shanghai. There is a pleasant garden here too. On the downstairs lobby walls hang portraits of Dr. Sun Yatsen, Chairman Mao and Madame Song taken when Mao came to visit. It was in a room here that Song Qingling met leading members of the party and government, and entertained numerous foreign heads of government. Upstairs are Song Qingling's bedroom and office, and a quaint display of what are designated to be "cultural relics" that she used during her lifetime.
How to get The Former Residence of Song Qingling : Take the subway to Hengshan Road station and walk about twenty minutes.
Address: No.1843 Huaihaizhong Road

Longhua Temple
Longhua Temple
The Longhua Temple (Longhua Si) is the oldest and largest temple in the Shanghai area. Although Longhua Temple was built during the Song Dynasty, the current Longhua Temple was established during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty. The temple kept its original Song Dynasty Chan Buddhist appearance, however and in terms of architectural design, the temple is a relatively complete complex. It contains Buddhist scriptures and magnificent statues from the Tang, Ming and Qing Dynasties.
Longhua Temple is dedicated to the Maitreya Buddha and holds two important Buddha statues. In the Hall of Heavenly Kings, stands a statue of Maitreya Buddha's Bodhisattva form, while in the Maitreya Hall is a statue of Maitreya Buddha's incarnation known as the "Cloth bag monk". The secondary statues in Longhua Temple are also different from other temples. In other Buddhist temples on the two sides of a hall are either 18 arhats (monks), who preach Buddhism or 20 "guardians of Buddhist Law" (heavenly beings). However, in the Halls of Longhua Temple, the arhats and "law guardians" stand together.
In the front of the temple sits Longhua Pagoda. Said to have been built in 249 A.D, Longhua Pagoda is a 7 tier octagonal brick tower with a total height of 40.4 meters. This magnificent and graceful pagoda is one of the best preserved pagodas in the Shanghai area.
Address: No.2853 Longhua Road.

Eat in Shanghai
Shanghainese cuisine is one of the lesser-known types of Chinese food, generally characterized as sweet and oily. The name "Shanghai" means "above the sea", so unsurprisingly seafood predominates, the usual style of preparation being steaming. Some Shanghainese dishes to look out for:
xiao long baozi (小籠包子, lit. buns from the little steaming cage, or little dragon buns), probably the most famous Shanghai dish: small steamed dumplings full of tasty (and boiling hot!) broth and a dab of meat. The connoisseur bites a little hole into them first, sips the broth, then dips them in rice vinegar (醋 cu) to season the meat inside.
dazha xie (hairy crabs), best eaten in the winter months (Oct-Dec) and paired with Shaoxing wine to balance out your yin and yang
xiefen shizitou (crab powder lion heads), actually pork meatballs containing crab meat
zui ji (drunken chicken), chicken steamed then marinated in rice wine, usually served cold
"You Tiao" , one kind of breakfast that is very popular in Shanghai
For cheap Chinese eats, head for the alley known as Wujiang Road. For fancier food in nicer surroundings, try the upmarket restaurants of Xintiandi.
Vegetarians should not miss Vegetarian Life Style (258, Fengxian Road and 77, Songshan Road) where you can experience nice, affordable and organic vegetarian food resembling real meat or fish dishes in a fancy atmosphere.

Old city and market
One of the thinks I was looking forward to visit was to go and see the old city, so one morning we woke up early as usual and headed towards the old city with the intension to have a look at the old city and visit the Yu Yuan Garden. The city was as I imagined, with old houses and narrow streets, with smell of Chinese food and humanity and curious people starring at you, thinking what can 2 European might look for in their old city. Well, what I was looking for was to experience some old Chinese cities. As it was less than 07:00 o’ clock in the morning, the streets were not so crowded so I could stroll around for an hour without being embarrassed by too much crowd. In the middle of this old Shanghai city, there is Yu Yuan Garden, a classical Chinese Garden with corridors and bridges over ponds and nice vegetations, tea houses. This combination of old Chinese architecture, corridors and bridges, vegetation and the air of ancient times makes the Garden special.Leaving the Garden I had a feeling I had just been part of China’s old history.Heading the Xiang Yiang market which was only 30 minutes walk away, we passed through the old city food market which is difficult for me to exactly describe but I shall mention only the tiny, dirty, crowded and smelly streets that one could hardly breathe the air, with people selling fish, vegetables in the most deplorable conditions I could not imagine it existed in the 3rd millennium and which did not at all reminded me of the modern civilization I had previously encountered in the new city area. Those few minutes spent there were ages to me and I had the feeling I could never find the way out from that area. I felt fear, panic and disgust in the same time. The place was so crowded that at any minute I had the chance someone to touch me and as I was keeping tight my bag I was thinking “ What the hell was I looking there? Why didn’t I mind my business and was so stubborn to visit the place?”…because I did not know it was so unattractive. Finally we got to the Xiang Yiang market and was anxious to shop. Shopping in a market can be an interesting experience.
Shanghai Travel Information
GENERAL INFORMATION
Throughout the past century, Shanghai has had numerous name tags attached to it; the "whore of the East", the "Paris of the Orient" and the "Pearl Of China". Images of Shanghai more than any other Chinese city, are bountiful in the west. A visit here therefore, is naturally tainted to some extent, with a preconception of how the city will be.
As the largest and most prosperous city in the nation, Shanghai is the economic, financial and cultural center of China, where Beijing is the political heart. And this image of Shanghai as a fast and modern metropolis is certainly the one that most visitors take away. Those old preconceptions of Shanghai as the home of crime vice and prostitutes are wiped away, as the city successfully projects an image of itself as young, vibrant and cool.
Shanghai is a modern and fast paced city, rich in history and culture and with a wealth of areas and sites just waiting to be explored. One of the nicest aspects of Shanghai is that the crowds here are much more manageable than in a city like Beijing. This is largely because there are no great ancient sites which people flock too. Rather, this is a city to be walked, wandered, explored and discovered in your own time and, in your own style.
What makes Shanghai particularly attractive are the many different styles of architecture and design throughout the city. Shanghai was once divided up into different "Concessions" or districts and the boundaries of these areas still remain today. The famous, Bund was home to the "British Public Park" and this boulevard has a plethora of colonial structures to visit, all reminders of Shanghai's days of decadence. The Japanese and the French Concessions too, are fascinating areas to explore. The French quarter is a particularly charming district to wander, and there are many former residences to look at and discover something about old Shanghai and the people who lived here. The area known as the "Chinese City" is also worthy of a visit. Take a break from the tourists around the Yuyuan and do some serious antique shopping or just lose yourself amidst the old alleys and streets.
But perhaps most of all today, Shanghai is a spectacularly modern city. The pace of development here is unbelievable. Currently, seventeen percent of the world's cranes are in the city and developers boast that the city is changing at a rate incomparable to anywhere else in the world ever. The newest area of the city, Pudong, has just celebrated its 10th anniversary and is almost unrecognizable from the way it was when development began here. Two of the most impressive city structures can be found here, the Jinmao Tower and the Oriental TV Tower.
For any visitor to China, perhaps the most attractive thing about this city is just how fashionable it is. Museums, galleries, restaurants and bars have emerged in the past few years. This cosmopolitan cultural scene which harks back to the heydays of the 1920s and 30s and the new found wealth in the city are helping to reinvent Shanghai as a place with a fabulous and optimistic style and attitude.

The Leisure and Entertainment Street at Wujiang Road
The Leisure and Entertainment Street at Wujiang Road is the only stereo leisure street in Shanghai that segregates pedestrians and vehicles and has a two-layer walking street. In recent years, the street, after renovation, has turned into a fashionable food street. Along the street are uniquely-shaped mobile stores and movable flowerbed and trees. The street is an integration of subway traffic, shopping and leisure, tourism and sightseeing, and square culture. It is a unique leisure street that attracts the attention of the people of Shanghai.
Yandang Road Pedestrian Leisure Street
